Westerings provides parents with opportunities to regularly visit classes to see children's work, and to attend workshops and parent training opportunities throughout the year. Feedback from parents has been incredibly positive; "making me feel very happy and secure knowing they are leading my child’s development over the next few years, I feel our children are in great hands!" How you can help

Home-School Agreement

We value the support of Parent/Carers and recognise the importance of collaboration in a child's learning and development. It is also important that a child takes some responsibility for their learning and behaviour.

When children join our school, we ask Parents/Carers and pupils to read and sign an agreement between home and school. This clarifies expectations for all concerned.

Partnership is key to a child's happy and productive development at school and we look forward to working with our new Parent/Carers.

Help with phonics

So, what exactly is phonics?

Phonics is a systematic programme of learning that teaches children to read skillfully and quickly. Words are made up from small units of sound called phonemes which are represented by graphemes (letters). Children learn how to make grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) to help them to read and write.

Our Phonics leader, Miss Stryczek, along with our teaching team, has put together our phonics workshop resources in order to support you and your child at home with their early reading and writing. This includes a virtual phonics workshop video for anyone who has been unable to attend in school.

You will also find a wealth of resources and information around the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and how to help your child prepare for this at home.

Helping your child with mathematics

At Westerings, we believe that every child has the potential to achieve well in mathematics and we aim to inspire a feeling of enjoyment and curiosity for this fascinating subject. It can however be a challenging subject at times and requires persistence and determination to succeed. You will find here information about how mathematics is taught in school and some useful resources to help support your child at home.

THE MASTERY FLOW MODEL

At Westerings, we teach mathematics using the mastery flow model. This provides children the time to become sufficiently fluent and consolidate their understanding whilst allowing those who have grasped the concepts rapidly to be challenged with rich and sophisticated problems. For each mathematical concept, the children move through the flow model at their own pace with guidance from their teacher. The following is a simple guide to how the flow model works:

Mathematics Calculation Policy

The four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) are the most essential mathematical processes used in all branches of mathematics. The school's Calculation Policy is therefore a key document used by teachers to ensure progression of calculation concepts through a child's mathematical development. You may also find it a useful reference point in supporting your child at home with their learning.

Helping your child with science

Our Principles

As Westerings, we believe that Science is good when…

·       We all have a positive, excited attitude towards Science.

·       Children are asking and being asked questions, and are finding answers to these questions through investigation and exploration.

·       Children are challenged to try new things, to think differently and to be able to confidently talk about and share their learning.

·       Children are encouraged to think about the impact that Science has within the wider world and their lives.

·       We have the resources we need to make science fun, practical and exciting.

·       Everyone has an opportunity to succeed and show their Scientific understanding in different ways

·       Children adopt a growth mindset and can persevere and reflect on their learning, as well as celebrating their successes.

Today, the children learnt about viruses. They discussed how they occur, how they affect the body and how they are removed from the body. Then the children created slime, to represent a virus and removed it from their 'bodies'!
